Include letters, 1819-1835, to daughter Susan Barry Taylor, concerning politics in Kentucky, his political standing and popularity in Kentucky, campaigning for Andrew Jackson in Ohio and Tennessee, Henry Clay, his duties as Postmaster General, political patronage, his friendship with John Henry Eaton and wife Peggy Eaton, and the scandal concerning the Eatons. Topics also include popularity of Jackson, national politics, dissension in Jackson's Cabinet, Jackson's refusal to accept his resignation, the Bank of the United States, Martin Van Buren, allegations of corruption in the Post Office Department, and his acceptance of a post in Spain. Other topics include education of women, family news, marriage, letter writing, a carriage accident, news of son John at West Point, serious illnesses, medical treatments, and deaths of his children, social life in Washington, D.C., travel to Virginia and Monticello (1832), cholera epidemic among slaves, education of sons in a Georgetown Catholic school, and scattered references to slaves. Topics also include trips to Richmond and other places in Virginia, Aaron Burr, Henry Clay, decision to go into politics, his political future, engagement to his first wife, the death of his sister, and concern for his brother John's way of life.
