Videotape recordings, 1968-1972 [videorecording].

The accession consists of two one-half inch silent video tape recordings of two oceanographic expeditions of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. These videotapes are copies of original film recorded by Robert L. Fisher. Dr. Fisher retains the original film and copyright. The first videotape records New Odyssey, which was part of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Circe Expedition (1968-1969). This film was taken on R/V ARGO which departed San Diego on 7 March 1968 and returned on 30 January 1969. The videotape includes scenes of the departure of R/V ARGO, a track chart for the expedition and instruments and operations at sea. The videotape includes footage of Jeffery Dean Frautschy, George Shor, Alan Phinney and other scientists on the expedition. Footage depicting the mid-water trawl, temperature probe, corers, magnetometer, Nansen bottle is also included on the videotape. The videotape includes the footage of the arrival of R/V ARGO at the Chester W. Nimitz Marine Facility at Point Loma in San Diego. The second videotape records Scripps Institution of Oceanography Antipode Expedition (1970-1971) which includes footage taken in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean on R/V MELVILLE which departed San Diego enroute to Osaka on February 14, 1970. The videotape includes footage of the departure of the ship from San Francisco. The videotape includes images of Robert L. Fisher, Phyllis Helms, Dale Newhouse, George Shor, Stuart Smith, and other Scripps scientists and crew. The videotape includes operations on deck including deployment of balloons, hydrophones, and corers, use of explosives and the midwater trawl. There is footage depicting social life at sea, including scenes in lounges and the mess. The videotape includes views of other oceanographic vessels including R/V THOMAS WASHINGTON, R/V INVESTIGATOR and R/V ALPHA HELIX.
