Denckla, a Philadelphia investment banker, was commissioned in the U.S. Army Air Forces in April 1942. He was commanding officer of the 330th School Squadron at Luke Field, Arizona and later was attached to the 97th Combat Bombardment Wing, 9th Bombardment Division, 9th Air Force, in England and France.
