Includes two diaries kept by Dr. Eugene Cordell: one kept while he attended Charlestown Academy and Virginia Military Institute, 1857-1861; and one concerning university and medical matters at the School of Medicine at the University of Maryland, including descriptions of meetings, election of a provost, medical fees, physicians' salaries, trustees' funds, and diseases. Some references are to individuals active in the field such as Dr. William Osler. Earlier items in this collection include: letters of 1861 written by Cordell to family members while he served in the Confederate Army, describing the Harper's Ferry uprising and army life and strategy; an essay, undated, entitled "The Battlefield"; a letter of 1908 to Cordell from an alumnus of the University of Maryland, describing the use of the automobile in medical practice; an advertisement for a home for widows and orphans of physicians, prepared by Mrs. Cordell in 1913; a biographical sketch of Cordell; and a medical casebook from Baltimore Infirmary, kept by a Thomas Stone in 1836. Other items include clippings, notes, and a letter from Dr. Arthur M. Shipley.

Born in Ontario, Canada, Dr. Osler was received his medical from McGill University in 1872. He became Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's first professor of medicine in 1889. Author of The Principles and Practices of Medicine (1892), Osler has been celled the father of psychosomatic medicine and the "most influential physician in history."
