Richard H. Simpson administrative files, 1951-1956.

The series contains the administrative files of Richard H. Simpson, member of the State Road Dept. and the State Road Board, from 1951 to 1956. Simpson was appointed Chairman of the Board by Governor Dan McCarty. Most of the files contain correspondence to and from Simpson or reports on the various aspects of the Department's activities and projects during 1953. There is also some correspondence concerning the abuse of convicts and their labor at prison road camps. In addition, there is correspondence relating to the alleged corruption of the Department under Simpson's leadership. Simpson was cleared of the allegations and restored to office by Governor LeRoy Collins.

The State Road Dept. was created in 1915 (Ch. 6883, Laws) to develop a state road system. It was reorganized in 1955 as a department of state government under the authority and control of the State Road Board (1955, Ch. 29965, Laws).
