Saint Augustine map, 1589.

The collection contains an engraved, hand-colored map or view-plan by Boazio depicting Sir Francis Drake's attack on St. Augustine on May 28 and 29, 1586. The plan highlights Drake's Caribbean expedition in 1585 and 1586, and pictorially portrays how the English corsair captured and burned the fort and city of St. Augustine. The plan also includes an illustration of a dolphin, the first reproduction of any of the drawings of English America, by John White, a member of the 1585 Raleigh settlement of Virginia. Boazio very likely copied the dolphin illustration from White's manuscript sketch, and used it to illustrate the St. Augustine plan.
