The collection consists of letters, 1871-1874, and other materials of James Henry Rochelle (1826-1889) of Southampton County, Va., primarily concerning his service on the Peruvian Hydrographic Commission of the Amazon and the exploration of the Amazon River; a commonplace book, 1817-1878, kept by Rochelle in Southampton County (including a diary, 1873- 1874, kept in Brazil, Columbia, and Peru, and autobiographical notes concerning his service in the Confederate States and United States navies); a commonplace book, 1819-1864, of his mother, Martha Frances Blow (Hines) Gray Rochelle (1791-1870) of Southampton County; and correspondence, 1874- 1878, of John Randolph Tucker (1812-1883) concerning the Peruvian Hydrographic Commission of the Amazon.

Built in Philadelphia as the Habana, the CSS Sumter was originally used as a blockade runner in New Orleans. In 1861, she was purchased for use by the Confederate Government.
