The papers consist of letters and miscellaneous documents which were written by or belonged to Noah Hoyt/Hoit (1759-1811), his son Noah Hoyt (1788-?), and their families of Castleton, Vermont. The earliest document in the collection is a 1775 survey bill for a parcel of land in Castleton. Most of the deeds in the collection date from 1818-1868. The bulk of the letters in this collection are from the period 1811-1856 and are by or to the family of Noah (1788-?) and Hannah Hoyt, and includes a letter, written in 1861, describing the discovery of oil in West Virginia.

Noah Hoyt (1759-1811), also spelled Hoit, was a brother of Nehemiah Hoyt, one of the original settlers of Castleton, Vt. Noah moved to Castleton in 1784 where he was a farmer, a constable and land speculator. He married Sarah Moulton (1757-1857) on June 23, 1782. Their children were Calvin (1785-?), Noah (1788-?), Sarah (1790-?), and Moore (1796-?). His son, Noah, who married Hannah Wood in 1816, farmed in Castleton and was a captain in the Vermont militia.
