William Tennent papers, 1758-1889.

Handwritten transcripts (ca. 1828) of the correspondence (1758-1776) of William Tennent (1740-1777) copied and annotated by Charles Tennent with several later annotations (1889) by William Tennent. Also includes poems (1759-1838), essays, memoirs, speeches, and a hymn (1831). Correspondence consists primarily of love letters from William Tennent to Susannah Vergereau. Other correspondence is from Elias Boudinot [secretary to President George Washington] to his cousin Susannah Vergereau Tennent and to William Tennent concerning family matters, religion, and politics. Additional papers include poems, essays, memoirs, speeches, and other writings of William Tennent, some of which express his dissatisfaction with the British. A missionary hymn (1831) may have been added by Charles Tennent. A poem "To a flower garden" (1838), dedicated to Charles Tennent, was added by his wife Ann Martha Smith Tennent after his death.
