Springfield Plantation journal, 1831-1864 (bulk 1832-1843).

Bound plantation journal and loose papers pertaining to Springfield Plantation owned by Francis Withers and later by Joshua John Ward. Note inside the front cover reads "Begun to plant rice at Springfield on March 31 In year of Our Lord 1806." "A list of Negroes on Springfield" (1843) also contains a "List of Plough Man [Men]." Other lists include births (1833-1842), quantities of corn received from Negroes, tools given out (1847) which lists names of individuals and types of tools received (n.d., 1849, 1850), other items received, articles received for plantation use (1843-1847), amount of rice winnowed (1833), and notes on crops. Notes concerning plantation events (1847 March-Nov. and 1831-1851) list pregnancies of slaves. Loose papers include a copy (n.d.) of a directive (1864) issued by the State of South Carolina, Horry District signed by J.H. Thompson, Office of the Clerk of Court, to W.H. Tucker, R. Poston and W.W. Oliver (Managers of Election for Troop Muster Shed) to hold an election for sheriff of Horry District. An envelope and piece of paper contain notes. Another paper contains lists of livestock and their numbers. Several pages torn from the volume contain lists of the names of slaves (1847, n.d) and the names of slaves receiving tools (1842, n.d). Included on these pages are the names of female slaves and the dates (1839-184- ) when their children were born.

Plantation owner Georgetown District, South Carolina and South Carolina Senator. Colonel Joshua John Ward married Joanna Douglas Hasell (1805-1878) in 1825. Born at Brookgreen Plantation, Ward amassed a large estate in part by reinvesting profits in land and slaves. Ward's estate eventually included a number of plantations and over 1,000 slaves (S.C. census, 1850). After his death in 1853 Ward's son Joshua apparently managed his plantations. Business man and plantation owner of Georgetown District and Charleston, South Carolina. In his will Francis Withers bequeathed his plantation, Springfield, to his niece Mrs. Mary Memminger. Springfield had been owned by Washington Allston before the property was sold to Robert and Francis Withers. The land was later sold to Joshua John Ward.
