Handwritten copy of "Marion's order book" [order book of Benjamin Marion] copied by Edward Willis and/or W.G. DeSaussure (during the late 19th century?) into three small writing or copy books include orders and company rosters. Volume 1 includes lists of the names of members of the companies of Barnard Marion, Daniel Linder, James Skirving, Edward Plowden, Jacob Jeneret, Archibald McDaniel, Peter Buckholdt, Hugh Horry, Robert Lide, and John Redmond. Volumes 2 and 3 contain orders (1776 April 2-30), returns of the 1st Regiment commanded by Colonel Christopher Gadsden (1778 October 23, left blank), return of the 2nd Regiment commanded by Colonel William Moultrie (1778 October 24, left blank), memorandum concerning provisions for use of the command of Capt. John Lining (1780 February 20), return of drafted men of Capt. Lining's company (1778 December 5 and 1779 January 4) and those who marched on duty (1779 March 5), return of Capt. Lining's Company (1780 February 16), receipts for pay of men in Capt. Lining's Company (1779 July 5), and the return of the detachment stationed at Haddrel's Point (1778 December 11).

Lieutenant Colonel Wilmot Gibbes DeSaussure (1822-1886) of the 1st Artillery Regiment of the South Carolina Militia, which was later absorbed into the Army of the Confederate States of America, commanded Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island, December 1860-January 1861, and artillery at Morris Island, March-April 1861, in the harbor of Charleston, S.C. A number of South Carolina militia units were adopted into the Continental Army. The 1st South Carolina Regiment, organized in 1775, consisted of ten companies. The 2nd South Carolina was organized in summer 1775 at Charleston to consist of ten companies from eastern South Carolina. On Nov. 4, 1775, it was adopted into the Continental Army and assigned to Southern Department.
