Volume contains: 1. Rules for the formation of troops. 2. Journal of a campaign to the southward (Brig. Gen. Robert Howe's expedition against the British on St. Mary's in Florida, 1778 May 9-June 14). 3. Orderly book (1778 Aug. 24-1780 May 10). 4. Proceedings of a Court of Inquiry held at Purrysburgh (1779 March 13-16, the court martial of Brig. Gen. John Ash). 5. Journal of the siege of Charles Towne (1780 March 28-May 12). 6. Copies of letters (correspondence between Gen. Lincoln and Sir Henry Clinton) and Articles of Capitulation. Includes charts listing the number of officers and staff stationed at various locations, lists of officers (and their dates of commission, resignation, and promotion), and a technical drawing of a gun (cannon). A note in the front of the volume states that the handwriting in the first part of the book ("Journal" and part of the "Rules") is that of John F. Grimke. Another note (1890) attributes the first note to Grimke's son, Thomas S. Grimke.
