4th Brigade order book, 1861-1862.

Order book containing orders for the South Carolina Militia, Fourth Brigade, Second Division probably kept by or for Brigadier General Wilmot G. DeSaussure. The collection also consists of loose pages containing orders, a letter and pages from a letterpress copybook containing orders of Brig. Gen. DeSaussure, signed by Louis D. DeSaussure, and lists of the names of officers and staff. A clipping pasted in the volume pertains to the 2nd Division. Orders (many by Brig. Gen. DeSaussure) contain information about courts martial, supplies, lists of individuals exempted from duty, troop movements, and related matters.

Lieutenant Colonel Wilmot Gibbes DeSaussure (1822-1886) of the 1st Artillery Regiment of the South Carolina Militia, which was later absorbed into the Army of the Confederate States of America, commanded Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's Island, December 1860-January 1861, and artillery at Morris Island, March-April 1861, in the harbor of Charleston, S.C.
