The olden time of Carolina, 1851-1864.

Bound typescript copy of "The Olden Time in Carolina" with handwritten annotations and corrections. Volume compiled in 1855 contains "letters" (dated 1851) from Poyas to the only son of her first cousin Thomas Henry Smith. Poyas's letters contain information about families and events in Charleston and the Lowcountry of South Carolina, and family stories and fables. Excerpts from various Smith family documents are included. Volume also contains letters and fragments of letters (1864) from Poyas to her cousin Robert B. Rhett, Jr. (publisher of the Charleston Mercury) concerning Charleston area historical events and genealogical information about the Smith and other Charleston area families. Poyas mentions the publication (by Rhett) of her daughter Mrs. Foster's poetry.
