James Simons diary, 1861-1863.

Volume contains "Diary. Army of Northern Va." and "Prescription Book." The first eighteen pages (1862 July 18 to 1863 Jan. 4) contain prescriptions interspersed with the names of individuals and artillery units. The diary proper begins: "This book was captured at the battle of Gaines' Mills June 27, 1862 and presented to me by Dr. Buist." Simons describes the formation, movement, and activities of the German Company. The author not only gives an account of army life in and around Richmond, Virginia, but he reflects on the condition of the countryside and its people. Simons provides information about both the professional and the social life of Confederate officers during the war. Among the officers mentioned in his account are Capt. W.K. Bachman, Lt. Rudolph Siegling, and Lt. Henry Wagener. The diary, at least the beginning of which was copied from another source or is reconstructed from notes, ends on Friday March 6, 1863 with the note "continued in Book No 2." Additional entries in the back of the volume include notes in German, medical notes signed by J.S. Buist, M.D., legal notes and definitions of legal terms, abstracts of chapters in "Story's equity" (a legal book), and several pencil and ink drawings.
