Smith-Murray family papers, 1856-1946.

Letters, estate records, photographs, and ephemera of the Smith and Murray families. A letter (1864) from William Baltus Murray at Oak Hill (N.C.) to his parents describes conditions and food supplies in North Carolina, and the theft of food by soldiers in his company. Three letters (1908-1910) from Murray Smith at Williston (S.C.) to Clothilde Smith discuss horses and family life. Estate records include an appraisal (1856) of the estate of John Smith, Sr. detailing the value of property and slaves. An estate record (1856) lists the names of purchasers and amounts paid for goods and chattels. The collection also contains ephemera and photographs of family members. Included is a photograph of "Dr. Winchester Smith when a member of the South Carolina Constitutional Convention in 1895."
