Farm journals of John Marshall and Robert H. Gaines, 1856-1883.

The journal, 1856-1857, of John Marshall describes the day-to-day tasks of running the Hermitage, a Prince Edward County, Va. plantation, including the weather, planting and harvesting, and frequent accounts of his interactions with slaves. The journal, 1871-1873, of Robert H. Gaines of Roxabel in Charlotte County, Va., lists crops planted, harvested, and sold, and daily life including social attitudes; the last pages of the journal function as an account book.
