McMillan (1893-1975) was born in Denver, Colorado, and attended Colorado College from 1915-1917, when he left school to join the U.S. Army. He soon transferred from the Infantry to the Army Air Corps and was commissioned as a pilot and 2nd Lieutenant in 1918. McMillan spent several years barnstorming before entering the air mail service as a pilot with Western Air Express (later Western Airlines) in 1929.
