Collingridge was an artist, engraver, cartographer, linguist, historian and writer. He studied wood engraving and painting in Paris. He became an expert wood engraver and worked for all the leading newspapers of the day. In 1879 Collingridge emigrated to Australia and joined the staff of the "Illustrated Sydney news".
