Papers include correspondence primarily documenting Joseph McQuaide's travels, health and everyday life as a soldier during the Civil War. These letters were written from Camp Wilkins (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and from various camps in Virginia. Also included is a letter regarding the death of John McQuaide from typhoid fever while in California and the disposition of his remains.

Joseph L. McQuaide was a Westmoreland County native who served as a corporal in Company C, 9th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Reserves (38th Pennsylvania Infantry). McQuaide died on August 30, 1862 at the Second Battle of Bull Run. John McQuaide is a relative who worked on a wagon train in California. From the description of Papers 1853-1863 (bulk 1861-1863).
