Brady Aviation School, Curtis Field Collection.

Prior to World War II, Brady used a pasture southeast of town as an airport. The election of Harry Curtis as mayor of Brady in 1939 marked the beginning of the Brady Aviation School - a move to help put to work some 300 unemployed men in the town. When the war began, Brady was declared a National Defense Area and construction started on the Primary Training School. Curtis field continued to train pilots until 1945. The base was unique in that it was only one of three privately owned basic training schools in the U.S. The school trained 10,000 pilots who flew more than 700,000 flying hours. The collection contains a one page history of Brady Aviation School and seventy-nine (79) 35 mm negatives of pilot training during World War II.
