Born in New York, Pierce moved to Porter County, Ind. in 1856 and attended law school in Chicago 1859-1860. After working in law, he became a newspaperman, and edited papers in Chicago and Minneapolis. He also served as governor of the North Dakota territory, senator from North Dakota, and as minister to Portugal.
