Phrenological character of James Wolfenden, Oldham, Sept. 1865 / given by L N Fowler, Practical Phrenologist.

A manuscript case report for a phrenological reading of the character and mental development of James Woolfenden (sic; i.e., Wolfenden), a mathematician from Hollinwood near Oldham, Greater Manchester, England. Wolfenden died 29 March 1841 at age 87. Measurements apparently were done retrospectively on a bust or cast of his skull. The text begins: "This head indicates an unusual development of the mental temperament. This brain must have been exceedingly active, and his mind more than ordinarily clear and distinct in its operations." Bound in illustrated printed wrappers; lower wrapper contains advertisements (works on phrenology and physiology, health, etc.) for "Standard works published by Fowler and Wells, 308, Broadway, New York, U.S. London: Sold by W. Tweedie, 337, Strand" and imprint "H. Greenwood, printer, Liverpool".
