Seward writes on a variety of matters including Walker's accident, his philosophy, a recent election and her poetry, as well as Dr. Darwin's poetry. Seward also quotes several lines from Portia's speech on mercy from The merchant of Venice, beginning "It droppeth, as the gentle rain from heav'n ... "
