Autograph letters signed from W.J. Rolfe, Cambridgeport, Massachusetts, to various recipients [manuscript], 19th-20th century.

(1) Dated September 9, 1879 to an unidentified recipient; Rolfe is not sure if he will like the editorship of the Shakespeare department but is willing to undergo the "experiment" if the recipient really desires it. He will take whatever can be afforded for remuneration. (2) Dated January 13 (no year) to Abbott; Rolfe informs Abbott that his edition of The lay of the last minstrel will be the fiftieth volume he has "thrust upon a patient public," and asks for mention of this in the Literary world publication. (3) Dated Thursday to "Sir"; Rolfe regrets that he will not be able to accept the recipient's kind invitation because he wll be out of town.

William James Rolfe was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, on December 10, 1827, the son of John Rolfe and Lydia Davis. After attending Amherst College from 1845-1848, he was principal and master of several high schools in Massachusetts. He later became a prominent Shakespearean scholar and textbook author.
