The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. Mary L. Willard was born on May 19, 1898 at Penn State in Moffatt Cottage which once stood where the west wing of Pattee Library is now located. Her father, Joseph Moody Willard, was Penn State University professor of mathematics and namesake of the Willard Building. After completing her Bachelor of Science and Master's degrees at Penn State in 1921 and 1923 (in chemistry and organic chemistry, respectively), she went on to earn her Ph.D. in organic chemistry at Cornell University in 1927.
