Oral history interview with Martha Walker, 2000.

The first woman elected to the Arlington City Council in 1972 (Arlington, Texas), Martha Walker discusses her education at the University of Oklahoma and Arlington State College (University of Texas at Arlington), as well as her later return to college at Texas Christian University's Bright Divinity School. She talks about her work as women's services officer at the Arlington Bank and Trust, having a city park named after her, and her more recent plans for a trip to Russia. She also talks about her health issues, the death of her son, her divorce, and her grandsons. She reflects upon the change in the roles of women that she witnessed throughout her life. She describes her campaign for Arlington City Council and the civic issues during the 1970s, in addition to her involvement over the years with numerous civic projects, such as the Fielder Museum project, the East Arlington renewal project, the North Texas Municipal League, and the 1974 Texas Constitutional Convention. However, her fondest memories were of her lifelong association with the eight members of her Wednesday Night Bridge Club, with whom she experienced mutual support and friendships that have lasted for over forty years.
