The La Jolla Civic-University Symphony Orchestra and Chorus was founded in November 1954 by Peter Nicoloff, a violinist with a distinguished career in Europe. The symphony's mission was to advance public knowledge and appreciation of music. Thirteen years later, in 1967, the orchestra added a permanent chorus and merged with the newly formed Department of Music at the University of California, San Diego.
