Ernest Rudolph Tyler was born on 14 May 1886, the son of John Edward and Marth Adelia Capehart Tyler. He studied law at the University of North Carolina, 1912-1914; married Ethel Leigh Pierce, 12 September 1917; and settled at Oaklana, Roxobel, Bertie County, N.C.
