White was born in New York and studied law. After moving to Lafayette, Ind., he became active in state politics and later served in the U.S. House and Senate. He was appointed by President Lincoln to adjust claims for Indian depredations, and was appointed a federal district judge in 1864. He also practiced law with Rufus A.
