Fawn (Ship : 1812) logbook, 1817-1818.

Logbook kept by Austin during the Fawn's 1817-1818 voyage from Boston to Port Louis, Mauritius and Bombay, India. The daily entries record the ship's latitude and longitude, the direction of the wind, and the ship's navigational course. Most entries include a brief note describing the weather and the sails used that day. There are also entries for the ship's time in port. Austin occasionally mentions other notable events, such as the passing of other ships and the death of a crew member. Austin devotes several pages at the end of the log to recounting his impressions upon sailing past the island of St. Helena, where Napoleon Bonaparte was incarcerated after his final defeat at Waterloo. Separate from the ship's log is a [22] p. journal used to record a quarter bill for a "third voyage to India" dated June 26, 1818; general orders dated June 11, 1818; a bill of fare dated June 1818; and a station bill dated June 30, 1818. Ms. notes indicate that the journal was later adapted for a voyage on the ship Panther.
