Journal of trip on examination of certain land in the Navajo Reservation, 1914, March 22-April 9.

This journal consists of portions of letters by P. D. Southworth to his wife, written from March 22 to April 9, 1914. Southworth describes the Arizona landscape as "a barrenness...I have not seen in any other part of the Southwest," yet he also calls it beautiful. His group was surveying the area around Leupp, Oraibi and Winslow, Arizona, as well as the Navajo and Hopi reservations. In his letters, he talks about the weather conditions, the hazards of walking in the sand, specifically for their horses, the trips back to town for supplies, his concern about his wife and children in Phoenix and his longing to be finished with this survey and return home. Southworth describes meeting Charles Hubbell at one of his family's stores and staying the night at Hubbell's house. In thirteen pages of his journal, Southworth describes and gives his impressions of the Navajo and Hopi Indians, their culture, traditions, and history. Southworth frequently mentions William A. Moody, the leader of the survey. The manuscript is a facsimile copy of a transcript.

55 pages, facsimile of transcript.
