Autograph note signed from W.J. Rolfe, Cambridge, Massachusetts, to an unidentified recipient [manuscript], 1897 April 3.

This note is written on the back of a printed form titled "The Best Ten Short Poems," which Rolfe has filled in. However, in the note, Rolfe says that he presumes that it will be of no use to the recipient and that he generally declines to answer questions of this kind.

William James Rolfe was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, on December 10, 1827, the son of John Rolfe and Lydia Davis. After attending Amherst College from 1845-1848, he was principal and master of several high schools in Massachusetts. He later became a prominent Shakespearean scholar and textbook author.
