Interview with Ike Kampmann, an Army veteran, concerning his role as the defending attorney for four Japanese soldiers accused of spying during the Philippines Campaign, 1944-45. Assignment to 6th Army Headquarters and appointment as defense attorney by General Walter Krueger; description of the trial proceedings; conviction and execution of the accused Japanese soldiers; personal doubts about the fairness of the trial. Appendix includes personal letter to Dr. Ronald Marcello, Professor of History, University of North Texas.

William John Alexadner was born of Scottish parents in Hamilton, Canada West, in 1855. He was educated in Hamilton and at the University of Toronto where he won a scholarship which enabled him to study English at the University of Wales College in Charlottetown for two years. He obtained a PhD in Greek And Philology at the newly constituted Johns Hopkins Unviersity in 1833, and spent a further year studying modern languages in Heidelberg.
