Samuel S. Vaughan was born in 1928 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Before enrolling in the Pennsylvania State College in 1948, he worked as a filmmaker with the movie production unit of the U.S. Marine Corps. While at Penn State, he was the founding editor of the campus literary magazine Inkling and the editor of the undergraduate humor magazine Froth.
