Interview with John C. Reas, a Navy veteran and a survivor of the sinking of the USS Houston, concerning his experiences as a prisoner-of-war of the Japanese during World War II. Sinking of the Houston, 1942; capture and imprisonment in Serang, Java; Bicycle Camp, Batavia, 1942; Changi Prison Camp, Singapore, 1942; building the Burma- Thailand Death Railway, 1942-44; Rat Buri Thailand, 1944-45; liberation. Appendix includes photocopies of a handwritten account of the sinking of the USS Houston, five pages dealing with incidents in the camps, letters to Dr. Ron Marcello, University of North Texas, and Pat Bozeman, University of Houston, four pages listing the survivors of the sinking of the USS Houston, singed letter from a an escaped POW who turned in the list to the US federal government, photo of the wallet in which the survivor list was kept in, speech delivered by Lt. Col. Y. Nagamoto to the allied prisoners at Thanbyuzayat, Burma on October 28, 1942, diagram of the headquarters office, three pages detailing incidents at the headquarters, letter from a fellow veteran informing the interviewee of the passing of fellow POW, a letter from Patricia Bozeman, University of Houston Special Collections and Archives, thanking the interviewee for the documents.
