The papers contain foreign service office files, appointment books, articles and a draft of Howell's book "Besieged," correspondence, audio and video cassettes, photographs, miscellaneous printed materials and news clippings. Of interest are a set of videocassettes from The Liberation of Kuwait conference held at the University of Virginia, February 2001. Speakers included Ambassador Howell, H. E. Mohamed Al-Sabah, Dr. Shafeeq Gabra, Dr. Bertram Brown, H.E. Shaikh Saud Naser Al-Sabah, General Tommy Franks, R. K. Ramazani, and David E. Long. There are also audiocassettes of an interview concerning life in the American Embassy in Kuwait during the Iraqi invasion. Also of interest are primary materials collected by Howell on the Kurdish National Movement, 1961-1965; papers from a Peruvian conference "at the threshold of the millenium" including an article by Dr. Salman Akhtar; an affadavit in the case of Clifford Acree vs the Republic of Iraq; and papers concerning the Kuwait Dipllomacy Institute for Kuwaiti diplomats studying at the University of Virginia. In addition to articles by Howell the collection contains articles by Stanley Greenspan and Stuart Shanker, by Salman Akhtar and by Luis Feder.
