The collection primarily consists of the correspondence, 1884-1910, of Beverley Bland Munford (1856-1910) of Richmond, Va., in particular concerning his book, Virginia's Attitude Toward Slavery and Secession (1909), and including letters of Woodrow Wilson and William Howard Taft; scrapbooks, speeches, essays, articles, and poetry by or about Munford; and miscellaneous materials concerning Munford. Also, includes political and professional correspondence, 1884-1938, of Munford's wife Mary Cooke (Branch) Munford of Richmond, Va., in part concerning the education of women and Democratic party politics, and including fifteen letters written by William Howard Taft (some concerning Hampton Institute [now Hampton University], Hampton, Va., and the education of African Americans). Also, includes an autobiography of Mary Cooke (Branch) Munford's mother, Martha Louise (Patteson) Branch of Richmond, Va.; and miscellaneous materials of other members of the Branch and Munford families.

Munford was director of the Department of Public Welfare in Stamford, Conn., 1935-1940, and then director of Recreation and Personal Service Units with the American Red Cross in Ft. McClellan, Ala. During World War II she served with the Red Cross in England, North Africa, and Italy.
