Collection consists primarily of the personal correspondence of Douglas Huntly Gordon and of his wife, Elizabeth Iris Southall (Clarke) Gordon Biddle Gordon, both of Baltimore, Md. Correspondents include relatives and friends, as well as their children. Douglas's correspondence includes the exchange of letters, 1893-1918, that began with courtship and extended throughout the couple's marriage. Elizabeth's correspondence includes courtship letters from rejected suitors and a few letters concerning her second marriage to J. Wilmer Biddle of Philadelphia. A few household accounts survive for both Douglas and Elizabeth, as well as a small number of papers pertaining to the education of their children. Invitations, visiting cards, and brochures for schools and summer camps offer insights into the lives of a well-to-do family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The collection also contains a small amount of correspondence of Douglas's mother, Anne Eliza (Pleasants) Gordon, and of other family members.
