Two minute books and program yearbooks of the Saturday Afternoon Club of Richmond, Va., a literary society of educated single and married women organized by Mary Cooke (Branch) Munford for the purpose of self- culture and study. Members presented book reviews and papers covering topics such as education, architecture, religion, world history, political science, child labor and legislation, industrial training and the status of African Americans, and the roles of men and women in the home. Especially interesting are the opinions of members on these topics, which were occasionally noted by the club's secretaries. The women also discussed the need for civic and charitable involvement in the community but the club itself never officially adopted a charity to sponser. Included in the minute books are lists of members such as Virginia Randolph Ellett, Emily Earl (Chenault) Runyon, Lila Hardaway (Meade) Valentine, and a Miss Glasgow, possibly, Ellen Anderson Gholson Glasgow.

Munford was director of the Department of Public Welfare in Stamford, Conn., 1935-1940, and then director of Recreation and Personal Service Units with the American Red Cross in Ft. McClellan, Ala. During World War II she served with the Red Cross in England, North Africa, and Italy.
