Snow's "two cultures" essays, intended to bridge the gap Snow had described between the sciences and the humanities; C.P. Snow himself gave permission for the use of his name and spoke at an Ithaca College commencement early in the series (1967). Harvey Brooks (1915- ) was Gordon McKay Professor in the Division of Engineering and Applied Physics, and Dean of the Division from 1956 to 1975.
