This microfilmed collection of letters documents the personal and business affairs of the prominent Philipsburg (Centre County, Pennsylvania) families, Hale and Mull. It includes correspondence, financial, legal and military papers, diaries, journals, photographs, and daguerreotypes. The military papers and correspondence concerns the First Volunteer Battalion of Central Pennsylvania, the 107th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers (1861-1863), the Brady Regiment of the U.S.-Mexican War (1846-1848), the Bellefonte Greys (circa 1832-1839), and the Mifflin Guards (War of 1812).

The Hale family were early town settlers in central Pennsylvania. In 1852, Reuben C. Hale and his brothers James T., Elias W., and John M. purchased 60,000 acres near Philipsburg and operated the lumber and coal company, Morgan, Hale and Company.
