Civil case files, 1867-1875.

The Ramsey County Court of Common Pleas was formed in 1867 because the Ramsey County District Court was overloaded with cases and the Minnesota Constitution did not allow for the appointment of a second judge. The jurisdiction of the two courts was identical. These civil case files, Nos. 1-3275, were opened from 1867 through 1875. Some of the cases continued after the court's 1876 abolition; those documents are titled District Court. The majority involve suits for monetary judgments, although divorce cases, real property ownership contestations, appeals of rulings from the Probate Court judge, and actions to enforce payment of taxes and assessments are also present. Scattered throughout are large cases involving assessments for upgrades to or laying out of streets within St. Paul and numerous cases relating to the sale of bonds and receivership activities of the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad.
