Letters written from Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. by David Baldridge (Company H, 211 Regt., Pennsylvania Volunteers) and by William Thompson (Commissary Officer, 2nd Army Corps, 3rd Division, 3rd Brigade) in 1864-65. David Baldridge's letters are to his parents and describe military activities, skirmishes, deserters, and personal matters. William Thompson's letters are to his wife and discuss hardships of military life, troop movements, policies, battles, victories, and Union General Philip Sheridan.

Sheridan claimed he was born in Albany in the State of New York, the third child of six of John and Mary Meenagh Sheridan, Irish Catholic immigrants from the parish of Killinkere in County Cavan, Ireland.
