Frank Selwyn Neusbaum was born on January 8, 1904 in Mt. Union, Pennsylvania. He was a 1926 graduate of Pennsylvania State College with a bachelor of arts degree. During his junior and senior year he was directing and teaching as a part-time staff member of the English Department. Neusbaum began teaching English and dramatics at Pennsylvania State College in 1928 and earned his master of arts degree from there in 1933. The Ephrata Cloister, near Lancaster, Pa., was a religious community of German Seventh Day Baptists founded by Johann Conrad Beissel in 1728. Under Beissel's guidance, Ephrata became known for its mystical music, hymn writings, and manuscript illuminations.
