Sea captain and merchant; b. in Newbury, Mass., he commanded one of the transports in Gen. James Wolfe's expedition against Québec in 1759. He was later a member of the Provincial Congress in Massachusetts (1776), and in the same year was appointed Sheriff of Cumberland County, Me., a position he held until 1809.
