Edwin Lewis Stephens papers, 1883-1939 (bulk 1902-1939).

Papers of Edwin Lewis Stephens consist principally of letters pertaining to the affairs of Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute, of which Stephens served as president from 1900 to 1938. Early letters in the collection, largely written to his parents, concern Stephens' brief employment as a railroad worker in Iowa in 1889 his subsequent studies at Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College in Baton Rouge, La. Later correspondence pertains to his experiences in New York City, where Stephens earned a doctorate in pedagogy at New York University. Other items dating from this period include letters written to school administrators in Louisiana to gather data for his dissertation on public schools in Louisiana and a diary in which Stephens discusses his studies at New York University and other academic subjects. A copy of Stephens' dissertation accompanies the letters. Papers pertaining to Stephens' activities as president of Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute include correspondence concerning the recruitment of new faculty, the financial affairs of the institute, alumni dinners and faculty banquets, Stephens' lectures and guest teaching appointments at other universities, and efforts to solicit donations to the Thomas D. Boyd portrait fund at Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College. Other letters concern Stephens' participation in the Lafayette Chess Club. A large group of letters and other documents chart Stephens' efforts to defend himself against allegatations by Fernand Mouton, former lieutenant governor of Louisiana, that he mismanaged the financial affairs of the institute. Correspondence with Alcée Fortier, Governor Murphy J. Foster, John H. Overton, Governor Ruffin G. Pleasant, Huey P. Long, and Governor John M. Parker documents Stephens' involvement and interest in state educational policy and politics. The papers also include numerous clippings of news stories related to national and Louisiana affairs, visiting cards and postcards, invitations, photographic portraits of Stephens and other faculty members, and the text of speeches and articles by Stephens.
