The collection centers on James Robertson Vivian Daniel of Richmond, Va.; his wife, Hallie Wise (Williams) Daniel; and their sons, Robert Williams Daniel and James Randolph Vivian Daniel. Letters, 1883- 1904, between James and his wife, Hallie, offer insights into relationships between spouses in upper-class marriages, gender expectations and realities, and child rearing. Robert's correspondence, 1893-1914, with his parents discusses his education at the University of Virginia and offers insights into the socialization of boys and into his parents' conflicts with each other. James's correspondence, 1912-1913, with his mother and brother provides a twelve-year-old's perspective on his family life. A few letters from other family members and friends also appear in the collection.
