Papers, 1803-1954 (bulk 1819-1923).

The collection contains the papers of various members of the Archer, Claiborne, Cabell and Watson families. The papers of Herbert Augustine Claiborne of Richmond, Va., include business and personal correspondence, ca. 1833-1889, and concern family news and later family history, as well as his law practice and work for the Commissary Department of the Confederate States of America. Also included are Claiborne's lawyer's commonplace book, 1871; letterbook, 1877-1892; album of house photographs; and scrapbook, 1898. The papers of Catherine Hamilton (Cabell) Claiborne Cox, of Richmond, consist of nine diaries, 1903-1923, that discuss her social activities and meetings of various women's clubs. The correspondence, ca. 1841-1874, and accounts, 1852-1876, of Henry Coalter Cabell concern his law practice in Richmond and farm in Abbeville, S.C. Among the papers of members of the Watson family are the correspondence, 1819-1829, and accounts, 1829-1855, of Dr. George Watson and his wife, Virginia (Riddle) Watson. Their daughter, Anne Virginia (Watson) Archer, married Dr. Robert Samuel Archer, director of the Tredegar Ironworks in Richmond. With Archer's death, his widow became his executor. Her papers include information on the ironworks, as well as legal papers, a cookbook, and a family memoir, 1923. His papers pertain primarily to the ironworks.
