Charles C. Haynes Jr. was born in Durham, N.C., in 1921. He attended Duke University, where he played in the 1942 Rose Bowl held in Durham. Haynes left Duke to serve as a lieutenant with the 88th Infantry Division of the United States Army during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star for his service in North Africa and Italy.
